A Day in the Life of a Tutor: Why I Love Teaching Future Counsellors
Being a tutor for counselling students is more than just a role—it’s a privilege. I have the opportunity to guide, challenge, and support students who are on the journey of becoming a counsellor. What inspires me most is that these learners aren’t just gaining knowledge of theories and techniques; they’re preparing to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Facilitating Growth, Not Just Teaching Content
Tutoring in counselling education goes far beyond passing on knowledge. For me, the focus is on facilitation. I believe that learning should be a collaborative process where students feel empowered to explore, question, and reflect. As a tutor for future counsellors, my role is to create an environment that is safe, supportive, and encouraging—one where students can develop not only their academic skills but also their professional and personal identity as counsellors. This is the heart of student-centred learning.
Helping Students Find Their Strengths
One of the greatest joys of tutoring is supporting students in discovering their own strengths. Many arrive with doubts, wondering whether they are “good enough.” Through strengths-based learning in counselling, I get to witness those doubts transform into confidence. Watching a student recognise the qualities that make them unique—and then begin to harness those strengths in their practice—is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
The “Lightbulb Moments”
There’s something special about those moments when everything clicks. Whether it’s grasping a complex theory, applying a counselling skill in practice, or making a connection between personal experience and professional development, these moments remind me why I love teaching. They are not only evidence of learning but also milestones in the student learning journey in counselling.
The Bigger Picture: Shaping Tomorrow’s Counsellors
At the heart of it all, tutoring is about more than assignments and assessments—it’s about empowering students through teaching and shaping future professionals. Counsellors play a vital role in supporting people through life’s challenges, and it’s humbling to know that I get to contribute, even in a small way, to preparing the next generation for this important work.
Every day brings new conversations, fresh insights, and opportunities for lifelong learning alongside my students. No two days are ever the same, but the purpose remains constant: to support learners in stepping into their potential and their calling as counsellors.
This is why I love what I do, and why the role of a tutor in counselling education. It doesn’t just pass on knowledge, it transforms lives.
