Safeguarding in the Counselling Room

  • Michelles counselling and Training Online United Kingdom (map)

There is often a gap between what legislation tells us to do and what actually happens in the counselling room.

This workshop has been designed specifically for counsellors working with adult clients, where concerns about children, young people or adults at risk may arise through the therapeutic relationship. Together, we will explore how to balance our responsibilities to our client alongside our wider duty to protect others, while working within current legislation, ethical frameworks and our professional competence.

Through discussion, reflection and realistic counselling scenarios, this workshop bridges the gap between safeguarding theory and the realities of contemporary counselling practice, helping practitioners develop the confidence to think critically, make proportionate decisions and respond safely, ethically and compassionately when safeguarding concerns arise. At Michelle's Counselling and Training, I believe professional development should do more than provide knowledge. It should help counsellors develop the confidence to think critically, apply legislation and ethical principles thoughtfully, and respond to the realities of practice with compassion and professional judgement.

Safeguarding is one of the most important responsibilities we hold as counsellors, yet it is often one of the most challenging. While legislation and professional guidance provide an essential framework, the situations we encounter in the counselling room are rarely straightforward. We are often working with fragments of information, complex family dynamics, historical disclosures, uncertainty and competing responsibilities.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for qualified counsellors, trainee counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical supervisors and other helping professionals working therapeutically with adults.

Whether you are newly qualified or have many years of experience, this workshop offers an opportunity to strengthen your understanding, enhance your confidence and develop the professional judgement needed to navigate the complexities of safeguarding in contemporary counselling practice.

Our Philosophy

Knowledge alone does not always prepare us for the realities of practice and I believe that understanding develops through curiosity, reflection and discussion. Our workshops are designed to help counsellors bridge the gap between theory, legislation and real-world practice, supporting practitioners to think critically, practise ethically and work with confidence in the counselling room.
