Understanding the Inner Child

Exploring Childhood Experiences and Their Influence on Adult Life

Our early experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, relate to others and respond to the world around us. While we all develop unique ways of coping with life's challenges, some of the beliefs, emotions and patterns we carry into adulthood may have their roots in our earliest relationships and experiences.

This workshop explores the concept of the inner child as a way of understanding how childhood experiences can continue to influence emotional wellbeing, relationships and patterns of behaviour throughout adult life. Together, we'll consider how different theoretical perspectives help us make sense of these experiences and how this understanding can enhance our work within the counselling relationship.

Rather than viewing the inner child as a technique or intervention, we'll explore it as a framework for developing deeper therapeutic understanding. We'll think about how early experiences may shape attachment, self-esteem, emotional regulation and coping strategies, while recognising that every client's story is unique and should always be understood within the context of their individual life experiences.

Through discussion, reflection and practice examples, we'll explore how this understanding can help us work with greater curiosity, compassion and confidence, supporting clients in making sense of the past without losing sight of the present.

During this workshop we'll explore:

  • The concept of the inner child from a range of therapeutic perspectives.

  • How childhood experiences can influence adult thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

  • Attachment, emotional development and early relationships.

  • Core beliefs, coping strategies and protective responses.

  • The relationship between the inner child, trauma and emotional wellbeing.

  • Applying inner child concepts ethically within contemporary counselling practice.

  • Supporting clients with curiosity, compassion and respect.

  • The importance of professional boundaries, supervision and reflective practice.

Suitable for: Qualified counsellors, counsellors in training, clinical supervisors wishing to develop a deeper understanding of how childhood experiences may continue to influence adult life and therapeutic work.
