Exploring TA Theory in Contemporary Counselling Practice

6 Hours CPD

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a practical and accessible theory that can help us understand how people think, communicate and relate to others. It offers a way of making sense of the patterns we develop throughout life and how these patterns can influence our relationships, behaviours and emotional wellbeing.

In this workshop, we'll explore some of the key concepts of Transactional Analysis, considering how they can deepen our understanding of clients and support our work within the counselling relationship. Rather than simply learning the theory, we'll think about how TA can be applied thoughtfully and ethically within contemporary counselling practice, whatever your therapeutic modality.

Together, we'll explore how understanding ego states, life scripts, transactions and games can help us recognise relational patterns, increase self-awareness and support clients in developing healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

My aim isn't simply to teach Transactional Analysis. It's to help you develop the confidence to use TA concepts in ways that enhance your understanding of clients while remaining responsive to each person's individual experiences and needs.

During this workshop we'll explore:

  • The history and principles of Transactional Analysis.

  • Parent, Adult and Child ego states.

  • Transactions and communication patterns.

  • Life scripts and script messages.

  • Games people play and recurring relational patterns.

  • Strokes and recognition.

  • Applying TA concepts within an integrative counselling approach.

  • Using TA ethically within the therapeutic relationship.

  • Reflecting on your own communication and relational style.

Suitable for: Qualified counsellors, counsellors in training, clinical supervisors wishing to develop their understanding of Transactional Analysis and its application within contemporary counselling practice.
